Jim is the author of two novels (Circles and Blood of Beelzebub) and a book of three plays (Life Buoy, Astrid's Dream, and BIG DATA). He is also an actor, director, and professor.
His writing career was preceded by many years as an actor on Broadway and with the Off-Broadway companies Playwrights’ Horizons, Circle Repertory Company, and The Signature Theatre Company, which he helped found. He also appeared in the long-running Off-Broadway production of Moonchildren, with Tennessee Williams in his Small Craft Warnings, on multiple episodes of TV's Kate and Allie, and at major regional theatres, including The Long Wharf Theatre, Trinity Repertory Company, Studio Arena Theatre, and The Portland Stage.
He has also directed many productions including “All The Way Home” at the Ensemble Studio Theatre, “Road” at The Marymount Manhattan Theatre, “I Love My Wife” at Detroit’s Birmingham Theatre, “The Bacchae” at UNC-Chapel Hill, and over twenty-five productions for The Island Theatre at the University of Guam. His production of Beckett in Brief at The Commonwealth Theatre Company won the 2018 Elliot Norton Award for Best Production in Boston.
Jim has taught Theatre, English Composition, Film, and Literature at Marymount Manhattan College, Queens College (CUNY), The Colorado College, the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and the University of Maine. He was raised in New Jersey and spent most of his life in New York City, after receiving a BFA from Boston University and Ph.D. from the CUNY Grad Center. Jim currently lives in South Gardiner, Maine.
